Instructional Support
Distance Education Librarians are available to visit your off-campus class in person or virtually:
- Face-to-face at an off-site computer lab (when available)
- Virtually in the AETZone (ActiveWorlds or Teleplace)
- Online via the web conferencing software or in AsULearn
- Delivered from an ASU campus distance learning classroom when a receiving site is available at the remote site
- Occasionally, off-campus students inquire about coming to Belk Library for an instruction session -- small group or full class sessions can be arranged
Librarians can also provide instructional support in:
- AsULearn by developing content, designing assignments, monitoring a research forum, and more
- Assignment design by consulting with faculty to develop assignments that incorporate effective information literacy and critical thinking skills
- Resource page design by developing research or course-specific guides
- To schedule a library instruction session or to consult with a librarian for resource support, please complete and submit this form:

Reserves for Off-Campus Students
Electronic Reserves
Required and heavy demand course materials such as journal articles and book excerpts can be scanned and placed on electronic reserves.
Students identify electronic reserves by course number or instructor's name.
Students must have Adobe Acrobat to read e-reserves (a free download). Instructions are available on the Reserves page. All reserves are subject to US Copyright Law. Copyright information .
Click on Reserve Guidelines for Faculty to learn how to place materials on electronic reserve.
Print Reserves
The University Library has a written agreement with each of the Appalachian Learning Alliance community colleges. These agreements allow us to place a limited amount of print materials on reserve at those community colleges where ASU courses are taught.
Length of check-out at an off-campus site is usually at the discretion of the requesting faculty member. The community college library handles check-out and inventory procedures for the materials. Faculty are encouraged to identify reserve materials which will support your class at an off-campus site and talk with Dr. Martha Kreszock (kreszocmh@appstate.edu or 828 262-7188) to recommend purchase and make arrangements for delivery.
Distance Education and E-Learning Library Services Team
The University Library's Distance Education and E-Learning Library Services Team is committed to ensuring that off-campus students and the faculty who teach them are afforded the same level of library services and resources as their on-campus peers. Feel free to contact us with specific questions or requests.
