The Beulah C. Campbell Collection of Original Illustrations for Children's Books
The Beulah C. Campbell Collection features rare, original illustrations for children's books. Searchable by keyword, artist, author, or date, the collection is available on the web through ASU's Digital Collections.
The Rhoda Kellogg Child Art Collection
The Rhoda Kellogg Collection contains over 8,000 children's drawings from around the world. Used to study how children think and what causes them to draw certain patterns during the various developmental stages of childhood, the drawings are reproduced on approximately 255 microfiche cards located in the Microforms Collection on the lower level of the library. The print handbook for the microfiche set is located on the Microforms Reference shelf.
Audiovisual Materials, Kits, Models, Posters, Games, and Manipulatives
These materials are interspersed throughout the fiction and nonfiction IMC stacks, and may be located via the library catalog.
Big Books
Big books are enlarged picture books designed for group instruction. They are often used to teach emergent readers and special needs individuals. These books are stored in large plastic bags in the IMC reading area. A big book call number looks like this:

Biographies
Elementary, middle, and high school students use the IMC's biography collection. These books are shelved in the IMC's nonfiction section under the call number 92. Biographies are arranged in alphabetical order by subject and they can be found on shelf #12. A biography call number looks like this:

Board Books
Many board books are shelved near the big books in the IMC reading area. Others are housed in the E's on the low shelves in front of the reading area. Still others (especially bilingual board books) may be found in the nonfiction collection. Board books are typically used with babies and very young children. Types of board books include movable books, toy books, and sensory books.
Easy Books
Sometimes called picture books, Easy books are illustrated books designed for young or beginning readers. However, picture books are often used with older students as well. A distinguishing characteristic of a picture book is that the pictures are essential in telling the story. Easy books are housed on the low shelves in front of the reading area and typically serve preschoolers through 2nd graders. An Easy book call number looks like this:

Call numbers for easy books are derived from the author's last name. Multiple titles by the same author are then arranged in alphabetical order by title.
Easy Readers
Easy readers are designed for children who are just beginning to read. They are classed in the E's. See the IMC bibliographies for authors and grade levels.
Fiction
Once you can read a chapter book you will want IMC fiction. Our fiction collection contains materials for 3rd graders through 12th graders. Fiction is arranged in alphabetical order by the author's last name, and then by book title. A fiction call number looks like this:

Global Travel Trunk Collection
A collection of 120 books and audio-visual materials including seventeen large trunks (plastic storage bins) containing hundreds of cultural artifacts from around the world. Click here to learn more about this collection.
Non-Fiction
The IMC's non-fiction collection includes informational materials for school-aged children (PK-12), most of which corresponds to the content areas of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. These books are arranged in numerical order using the Dewey Decimal classification. A nonfiction call number looks like this:

Reference
The non-circulating reference collection includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other reference materials for school-aged children, as well as professional reference materials for educators. Located along the wall between classrooms 026 and 028, these books have call numbers that look like this:

Reserves (IMC)
We have a small reserve collection of Caldecott Medal winners housed on the low shelves next to Fred the Bear. These books do not circulate, but may be used in the library. They are identified by the orange dots on the call number label. There are duplicate copies of these titles in the IMC's circulating collection.
Textbooks
The non-circulating textbook collection includes North Carolina's state-adopted K-12 textbooks, teacher texts, workbooks, and manipulatives. They are most easily found by using the textbook tab on the IMC homepage. Textbooks with purple dots on the spine do not circulate. Their call number looks like this:

Young Adult Fiction
Representing both classic and contemporary titles, the IMC's young adult fiction collection is housed in the stacks located next to the non-fiction collection. Call numbers for these books begin with the letters "Fic."
