Information Literacy Skills Prize Awarded

The first Information Literacy Skills Prize Awards were presented at the Celebration of Student Writing on April 17, 2013.  Belk Library and Information Commons sponsored the contest, with help from the University Writing Center, the Composition Program, and Writing Across the Curriculum Program.  

U.S. State Department Grant Awarded to Librarian

Dr. Xiaorong Shao, Information Literacy Librarian at Belk Library and Information Commons, and two colleagues from the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, Dr. Xiaofei Tu and Dr. Wei Xie, have been awarded a $100,000 grant from the United States State Department to share English reading and film resources and lectures on US politics and culture with students and faculty at Northeastern University (NEU) in Shenyang, China.

NEH Grant to Provide New Islamic Studies Resources

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in collaboration with the American Library Association (ALA) has awarded Librarian Allan Scherlen and Kim Hall (P&R, and chair of ASU Humanities Council) the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf Muslim Journeys Grant.

Published Faculty Reception 2012

The Richard T. Barker Friends of the University Library is sponsoring its annual reception for faculty who published books during the past academic year (2011-2012) or who have achieved similar recognition in their fields. For example, music faculty who had works published or art faculty who had pieces accepted for major collections should be honored.

The reception will be held on Tuesday, November 6 at 3:30 p.m. with remarks at 4:00 p.m. in Room 421 in Belk Library and Information Commons. Chancellor Peacock and Provost Lori Gonzalez will be on hand to present the certificates.

Information Literacy Skills Prize

Belk Library and Information Commons, the University Writing Center, the Composition Program, and Writing Across the Curriculum Program present The Belk Library Prize for First-Year Students' Demonstration of Information Literacy Skills.  

This prize recognizes an outstanding research paper written by a first-year Appalachian State University student for a class in the UCO 1200 (First Year Seminar) or English 1000 course. The ability to find, evaluate, and use information effectively is an educational goal for every Appalachian State University graduate.

Library Receives Prestigious NHPRC Grant

Special Collections has received a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) for an ambitious two-year project that will eliminate the backlog of the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection and provide students, faculty, staff, and outside researchers with access to these collections.  Grant funds will primarily be used to hire a Project Archives Assistant. 

Doc Watson Tribute

When the University Library and the College of Arts and Sciences were seeking funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant in the 1990s, a fund was named the Doc Watson Endowment in Appalachian Music in honor of Doc's important contributions to Appalachian music and culture.

These were his words when he learned that the endowment would bear his name: "I'm certainly proud that my career in music has been an effort to preserve Southern Appalachian culture. And I certainly endorse the effort to catalog and preserve it. I strongly back the NEH grant."
