With the success of Tech Open House last year, we decided to put on another exhibit showcasing the digital technologies available in Belk Library during spring semester. Join us for our Tech Showcase on February 3-5, 2015 from 10 am to 4 pm in the Atrium of Belk Library and Information Commons.
Digital technologies change at a rapid pace. New gadgets and devices are cropping up all over the place. How are you to keep up with all the changes? Where can you go to learn more about your favorite electronic device?
Staff in Belk Library's Technology Services are on the bleeding edge of the latest in digital technologies. During the Tech Showcase, they will be available to demonstrate such things as 3D printing, Oculus Rifts, Makey Makey, and more.
Stop by and get answers to those nagging technology questions, or suggest ideas for workshops you would like to see in the future.

Technology for Teaching Fair: Enhancing Student Engagement and Learning is designed to enable teachers to share how they effectively utilize technology to enrich student learning. The format will be an E-Poster format with roundtable discussions in between sessions. This format is designed to promote interaction, sharing and collaboration. Poster presentations could include simple technologies which, for example, promote student engagement to the more elaborate technologies that empower creativity and professional presentations, projects and websites.
Potential presentation topic could include: ways to adapt a course or assignment for diverse needs or learning perspectives; the provision of choices/options; increasing accessibility to course and course activities; student research and publishing tools; using graphics, audio and/or animation; managing and documenting course activities, blogs and assignments; group or collaborative works; surveys and quizzes; learning support tools and strategies; course design; organizing and presenting; website and E-portfolio development; electronic rubrics and rating scales; ASULearn initiatives; distance learning formats; providing progressions and scaffolds to better match learning to student needs; large course engagement tools and strategies; and support services, just to name a few possibilities.
We encourage anyone using technology to submit a proposal and everyone to register to attend! Registration is free and includes lunch, refreshments and prize draws among other great things. If you have questions please contact Nigel Davies (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The Dean of ASU's Belk Library, Joyce Ogburn, asked me to share a little news about a most worthy endeavor accomplished last year.
My name is Diana Barbee, and I am the new Administrative Assistant to Dean Ogburn and a member of the Library’s Administrative Services team. I also serve as a committee member and volunteer for the ASU Staff Senate's program called AppKIDS. Our committee's goal is to organize hundreds of volunteers and gather resources to purchase warm clothing like boots, socks, coats, and gloves for local children in need. This effort was accomplished with a lot of volunteers and a year's worth of activities that served over 90 children. This was our 34th year doing this event, and it has grown as the community need has increased. Local school counselors selected children who would benefit the most. ASU students stuffed donated backpacks with donated school supplies. Faculty and staff transported children and took them shopping.
Faculty and off-campus donors contributed enough funds for each child to have a $160 budget. Local retailers provided extra deep discounts to help stretch each dollar. In addition, the ASU Business Affairs Office and the Chancellor's Office sponsored breakfast and lunch on-campus.
The children think it's really cool to be on campus and they may enjoy a mini tour at the end of the day. I've seen their eyes light up when walking through our big, beautiful library. Who knows, maybe one day, they just might want to attend college or work at a University. Actually, the program is inspiring to everyone involved. Even Chancellor Everts was moved to speak to the children and volunteers at the breakfast event. My coworkers and I agree that seeing a smile on every child's face that morning was the beginning of a perfect holiday season.

Special Collections, located on the 4th Floor of Belk Library and Information Commons, will be closed to the public until Monday, February 16, for repairs and restoration due to water damage. The rest of the 4th floor is open. Circulating materials in the collection are available through the Library’s Request It! service. Non-circulating materials, including rare books, archives, and manuscripts, will not be available until Special Collections reopens. The University Library at Appalachian State University seeks one or more librarians to work at the library service desk for 15-25 hours per week, for the period of January 15, 2015 through June 30, 2015. Additional hours and duties in other areas of the library may be possible.
The work will include research assistance, basic technology help, circulation assistance, and some nights and weekends.
Required: ALA/NCATE accredited library master’s degree or significant equivalent library experience in an academic, community college, or busy public library.
Preferred: Excellent written and oral communication skills.
The appointment will be an adjunct faculty member at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. Possible continuation beyond June 30, 2015 will be based on organizational needs and availability of funding. Any offer of employment to a successful candidate will be conditioned upon the University's receipt of a satisfactory criminal background report. Documentation of identity and employability of the applicant will be required before the hiring process can be finalized.

The two-year grant project funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission to process the backlog of the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection was successfully completed last month. Running from September 2012 to November 2014, the grant provided funding for a full-time processing assistant and for the purchase of archival supplies. The processing was completed by Project Archives Assistant Trevor McKenzie (the grant-funded position) and Processing Assistant Anita Elliott under the direction of Processing Archivist Cynthia Harbeson, who served as project manager.
As a result of this project, a total of 1,917.14 linear feet of previously unprocessed, and therefore inaccessible, materials were processed. This total was 707.14 linear feet (or 58%) more than the 1,210 linear feet outlined in the grant proposal. The project also resulted in the creation of 456 new finding aids (or guides to the collections) and the revision and enhancement of finding aids for an additional 75 selected collections. These finding aids are all online and searchable through our Special Collections website. The collections themselves are available for use in the Dougherty Reading Room, located on the 4th floor in Special Collections.
The Backlog Blog has been highlighting collections processed during this project for the past two years. Some of the collections included on the blog are: AC.104: Appalachian Land Ownership Task Force Records; AC.124: Speculation Land Company Records; AC.362: Hartzog Family Papers; AC.836: Stephens Store Records; and AC.689: Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina Records.

Knox, a Canine Good Citizen and registered with Therapy Dogs, Inc. will be here with his handler, Brianne Harris on Dec. 8 from 2 to 4 pm and Dec. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Brianne is an Appalachian 2012 Psychology alumna and says that Knox, a Great Pyrenees is a good listener and is great for hugging.
