Good Luck on Exams!
Through a successful collaboration with Student Accounts, the Registrar's Office, ITS and the University Library, all library charges will now sync with the ASU Banner system. This change will make the library billing process faster, simpler and more transparent. All library charges will appear at the library and on faculty, staff and student banner accounts beginning Monday, May 7th. This will enable faculty, staff and students to pay library charges at either the University Library or at Student Accounts.
You can pay at the library at the Main Circulation Desk using App, Credit or Debit cards, cash or check. At Student Accounts, you can pay face to face or online. NOTE: Be sure to indicate to Student Accounts personnel if you are paying face to face that your payment is for a library fine. Due to the timing of payments synced, please allow a minimum of 24 hours for proper credit to appear.
Please note that at any time, you may check your library account by going to MY ACCOUNT at the top of the University Library's home page (www.library.appstate.edu). Log in using your last name and banner ID number. You can check here any time, 24 hours/day for any fines, fees, hold's, late books from any web enabled device.
The Library has a number of group study rooms to make collaboration before the big test or presentation a breeze. However, at the end of the semester, and especially during exam week, the 26 group study rooms we have fill up quickly.
Here are some tips to avoid the stress of the end of the semester crunch:
Book a group study room ahead of time. During this busy, busy time, there will be no room for "walk ins" so a reservation is a must. Here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/d86l8ewBe patient with folks leaving a little late or arriving a little early for their booking... everyone is stressed so be kind in the transition.If you have any difficulty with groups vacating the rooms at their appointed time, please come to the Main Circulation Desk for assistance and ask to speak to a manager. We will assist you with the transition.

Throughout this week, we will be posting some tips to help make the end of the semester a little less stressful. Hope it helps!
Tip #1 Don't be a victim of lost files at the end of the semester!
It is heartbreaking when a student has something unexpected happen here in the library resulting in the loss of a critical paper or other research assignment. Sometimes all we can say is that we are sorry because the paper is a "lost cause." But there are tech solutions out there that can help minimize this risk.
Here are some solutions:
Don't open your document from ASULearn or email and begin to work on it. Be sure to save it to either:
1) Online free cloud computer spaces like Google Docs or Dropbox. These are free accounts and even the free versions give you lots of storage space. Dropbox also has an application that you can download to your own computer so that saving a document is as simple as saving it in the "Dropbox" folder. This will sync that document to any device used (whether at school, home, work, etc.).
2) Portable device such as a USB flash drive or burning to CD/DVD. We have both on sale at the Circulation desk if you need to purchase one.
3) Email the document to yourself.
4) Remember where you save it and DON'T save it to the Desktop unless it's REALLY temporary: If you use a library computer, be sure to note where you save the document. The best place is "My Documents" and should be the default.

The University Writing Center, located in Belk Library and Information Commons 008, will be open for drop-in sessions only during the week of Final Exams from 10am-3pm Monday, 5/7, through Thursday, 5/10.

Thanks to the 49 entries in our "Go Green - Guess How Many" Bottles and Cans contest! We had a great time with this contest! Guesses ranged from 37 - 70,000 (with the caveat that it was because there is a black hole in the middle of the bag)! The correct number was 102.
We had 2 winners of the "Go Green" Contest. The winners are.... Ambrose Young and Samuel Brown (seen below). They BOTH guessed 106 cans (the answer was 102!) Congrats on winning, guys! The winners won a Belk Library reusable book bag, a reusable coffee mug and a reusable drinking glass... as well as other little goodies inside the bag (i.e. candy!).
Keep your eye out for other fun activities! And thanks for going green to celebrate 2012 Earth Week in the library!
The Student Research Lab for Individual Quiet Study is open tonight through final exams in Classroom 026 on the Lower Level of Belk Library. Computers will be open for student use in this classroom. Unlike most of the library, there is no food or drink allowed in the classrooms and we ask that it be a quiet (no talking) zone. This lab will open Sundays – Thursdays from 5 pm until midnight regularly and can be opened if demand warrants it.
In fiscal year 11-12, the allocation to the Library's collection budget had to be reduced by $400,000, part of the overall $1.8 million reduction in library funding.
Since the library will not know about actual budget conditions until August 2012 or later, the library faculty has identified $400,000 worth of cancellations from the collection expenditures. The library has consulted widely with various groups including Faculty Senate and in depth with the Library Services Committee which has faculty, staff, and student members.
This website gives background information on the budget, the process, and the actual recommended cancellations. Please review this information and send feedback to University Librarian Dr. Mary Reichel (firstname.lastname@example.org) or John Abbott, Coordinator of Collection Management (email@example.com) by the end of the semester.
If the budget is not as bad as feared, the library will not make these cuts.
