Steps for screening a film in Belk Library and Information Commons

To reserve space in Room 114:

  • Complete the online reservation request form. If the date/time is available, and public performance rights are required, your reservation will flagged as 'TENTATIVE.'
  • If the film screening does not meet the Classroom Screenings/Face-to-Face Teaching then a letter of permission for public performance or a Public Performance License must be provided before your reservation can be confirmed. This proof must be provided at least 48 hours (and during Monday through Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm) prior to the event or your reservation will be cancelled.
  • Once your reservation is confirmed and prior to the scheduled date, contact Katherine Alford sends e-mail)(link sends e-mail) (or at 828-262-4972) for training on the equipment.

Information Literacy Prize Contest-First Year Students

This award promotes students' active engagement in the processes of library research and encourages them to synthesize library research skills with the reading, writing and critical thinking skills developed in their first year at Appalachian.


First Prize: $300 gift certificate to the bookstore

Second Prize: $200 gift certificate to the bookstore

In addition to the monetary award:

The winning student will allow a copy of his or her paper to be given to the University Archives.

The winning paper will be posted on the Belk Library & Information Commons Library website as well as the Composition and Rhetoric website.

Eligible students in the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 courses of:

  • UCO 1200: First Year Seminar (including honors sections) 
  • English 1000 (including honors sections)

Students wishing to enter a research paper for consideration should click on this application form

Criteria for Evaluation

Artemis Literary Sources

Artemis Literary Sources brings together Gale's premier literary databases in a new digital environment that allows researchers, faculty and students to search across these resources to discover and analyze content in entirely new ways. Artemis Literary Sources include the following databases:

  • Dictionary of Literary Biography Complete Online
  • Literature Criticism Online
  • Literature Resource Center
  • Something About the Author Online


Artemis Primary Sources unifies extensive digital archives and enables researchers to make never-before-possible research connections. The Artemis Primary Sources program combined major archives of eighteenth and nineteenth century monographs, manuscripts, newspapers, maps, and early photographs. Artemis Primary Sources include the following collections:

OverDrive eBooks

Belk Library & Information Commons offers students, staff, and faculty access to OverDrive, a service which allows users to download ebooks and audiobooks to their favorite mobile device. Titles include popular fiction, study aids (GRE, LSAT, GMAT, CPA), travel guides, foreign language study audiobooks, and more.

Items are available in four formats: Kindle, EPub, MP3 and WMA audio. Download to your portable device using either the OverDrive App or a Kindle device or App. For help, see our Library Guide for eBooks/OverDrive, or visit us in the library. You can always read available ebooks through your browser without having to download any software.

Explore OverDrive to see the growing collection of downloadable ebooks and audiobooks, and enter your Banner/Univeristy ID number to download up to three titles at a time for a 21 day check-out. Titles are returned automatically at the end of the lending period, so there are never late fees.

Graduate Students:  Article Databases, Zotero and more!

Upgrade your library research skills and learn about services, resources, strategies and tools that will save you time.  Deadlines for those research papers are just around the corner.  New and returning graduate students welcome! 

Join us for a caffeinated Saturday morning workshop on September 27, 2014, 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (registration required). 

In Base Camp – Library Research Skills you will: 

  • Explore, identify and search discipline-specific article databases and other resources to obtain the most relevant results.
  • Learn advanced search strategies and other tips.
  • Utilize services that allow you to tap into resources beyond those at ASU – at no cost to you.
  • Learn Zotero, a free online, citation management tool.  Zotero allows you to easily collect and store citations for books, articles, web pages and more; cite-as-you-write to insert in-text citations within a document and use the collected bibliographic citations to create your bibliography.

Promotion image of American Song

In the spirit of our Common Reading program book, Clapton's Guitar, and in honor of Wayne Henderson and Old Time music, try out the American Song database!

American Song, part of Music Online by Alexander Street Press, offers tens of thousands of streaming audio from Colonial to Folk to African American to Country (including Old-Timey)  to Contemporary music and more. This database allows people to hear and feel the music from America's past. The database includes songs by and about American Indians, miners, immigrants, slaves, children, pioneers, and cowboys. Included in the database are the songs of Civil Rights, political campaigns, Prohibition, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, anti-war protests, and...Old Time tunes.

American Song includes music from many labels, including Rounder Records, McNeil Music, Native Ground Music, Rebel Records, County Records, Smithsonian Folkways, and Document Records. Liner notes to all the albums are included (in PDF format) as well as static URLs to each track and album in the database. This release includes 38,087 albums, equaling 522,538 tracks, growing regularly.

Please note: Online databases and resources are, in almost all cases, only licensed for use by ASU students, faculty, and staff.

Call for Volunteers for Distance Education Student Advisory Committee-2014-2015

We need your help!

Please join the Distance Education Student Advisory Committee to lend your voice and expertise on the best ways the Distance Education department can better serve its students. This committee offers a platform for you to voice your opinions and suggestions as well as an important leadership and professional development opportunity for students. Committee members will be responsible for exploring and reporting on issues related to Distance Education at Appalachian State, collaborating with each other on projects, and leading discussions on assigned topics.  Time commitment will not be overwhelming, but committee members will be expected to be adequately prepared for meetings.

The Process:

  • Several committee members for all Distance Education programs will be selected based on percentage of students enrolled in each college; ideally representatives from undergraduate and graduate programs within a variety of disciplines.
  • The Committee will participate via an ASU Learn course set-up to use multiple formats for communicating such as chat, forums, video-streaming, and web-conferencing.  The members will work independently and in groups to maximize our effectiveness.  If members wish and/or are more comfortable, face to face meetings  may be coordinated in various regions.
  • To volunteer please fill out this form: Volunteer Form for Distance Education Student Advisory Committee. The deadline for applications is September 19, 2014.
  • Committee members will be selected by September 25, 2014 and notified by email on September 30, 2014.

call for volunteers

Attention all students (Undergraduate and Graduate) the Belk Library is looking for volunteers to serve on the Belk Library Student Advisory Committee.  This Committee, which began in Fall 2010 has done many exciting things to make the library a more user-centered environment. The committee is charged to advise, plan, evaluate new services and operate as a sounding board and test group for new and existing services and new library initiatives.

The Belk Library Student Advisory Committee will be composed of at least two representatives from each class: freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior, and grads, and we encourage a variety of majors to apply. The committee will meet monthly throughout the semester or as needed at a time that is convenient for the majority of committee members. The first meeting will be in late September. The term for appointment is one year.  Your service on this is a great addition to your Co-Curricular Transcript.

So make your voice count! Inside the Audio Recording Room

Today, August 28, 2014, is the grand opening of the Audio Recording Room on the lower level of Belk Library and Information Commons. Patrons now have access to a soundproof room for audio recording--including narration, sound loops for video, and musical instruments.


Hours of Operation

Monday through Thursday: 10 am to 11 pm

Friday: 10 am to 9 pm


Reserve Your Time Slot and Check In

To use the Audio Recording Room, reserve your time slot using the Book a Study Room page on the library's website. You can also book the Audio Recording Room by scanning the QR code on the door with your smartphone. Here are the basic steps to follow:

  1. Log in with your university username and password.
  2. Select Advanced Room Finder.
  3. Choose Audio Recording Room to pick a date and reserve your slot.
  4. Provide your ID at the Tech Desk to check in.

You can use this room up to 4 hours at at time. No renewals for 4 hours after last use.


Software Programs and Recording Gear Available

Software programs include:

  • Adobe Audition
  • GarageBand,
  • Logic Pro X
  • Pro Tools 11

Recording gear available include:

  • 2 mics
  • Double-screen computer monitors
  • Mini-keyboard
  • Multi-track mixer
  • Audio interface
  • Connections for instruments and mics
  • Headphones

An instruction booklet is provided at time of checkout for the room.
