What Is Information Literacy?

"Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the needed information." (ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education).
Information literacy instruction is most effective when it is integrated into the academic curriculum. The library provides a curriculum integrated approach to library instruction designed to address student learning of both academic tools and research strategies. Librarians will collaborate with classroom faculty to provide instruction in information literacy concepts as well as the mechanics of locating, evaluating, and accessing information sources.
