What Can I Do for the Libraries?
Access Online Databases
There are numerous databases freely available over the Internet that can help you in locating materials, including magazines, newspapers, and journal articles, as well as finding books, music, photographs, and videos.
- American Memory - images from the Library of Congress
- America's Historical Documents - documents that record important events in American history
- ERIC - search for education-related materials
- Google Scholar - search for scholarly materials
- NC LIVE - access to thousands of magazines, newspapers, and journals (password required - available from your local North Carolina public library)
- PubMed - medical and health topics
- WorldCat - search for items in libraries near you
Borrow Materials with a Library Card
Appalachian State University alumni, regardless of place of residence, may acquire a library card. Presentation of a valid driver's license (or valid state issued picture ID) and verification of alumni status in the Alumni Directory is required. The cost of the card is $10.00 annually.
The card provides borrowing privileges for:
- Browsing
- Main Stacks
- Movies Collection
- Instructional Materials Center
- Appalachian Collection Stacks
- Music Library Stacks
- Government Documents
- ABC Express
- Book a group study room or viewing room
- Interlibrary Loan
- Music Library sound recordings
- State adopted textbooks from the IMC
- Remote access to databases
- Reserves
The standard loan period is:
- 3 weeks, with a 4-day grace period.
- 2 weeks for materials from Special Collections.
- 2 renewals are granted if there are no holds on the item.
- Telephone (828) 262-2818 and online renewals are permitted.
- Maximum number of items on loan cannot exceed 20. (Only 1 video or DVD and only 10 may be from the IMC.)
- The loan period for videos/DVDs is 3 days, with one possible renewal and no grace period.
