Fines and Overdues
Fines are charged for overdue items in order to encourage the timely return of Library materials and to provide optimal sharing of the Library's collections,. Patrons are responsible for returning or renewing items by the due date of the items. For most materials there is a grace period during which no fines are charged. If items are not returned within the grace period, fines become retroactive to the first overdue day.
Courtesy overdue notices are sent to a patron's e-mail address. For ASU Faculty, staff and students... this is your @appstate.edu email address. If you use an e-mail address other than an assigned campus e-mail address you are responsible for forwarding to your preferred address.
A block is automatically placed on any non-university affiliated cardholder owing $25.00 or more. Renewal of privileges will be denied unless all monies owed are paid and all items returned.
NOTE: Notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to receive or read a notice does not relieve the patron of responsibility for overdue fines. You may check on the status of your library account at any time on the Web.
Fines may be paid at Belk Library and Information Common's 1st floor Circulation Desk in cash, by check or with your Appalachian Express Card or by mailing a check made our to "ASU Library" to:

Fines not paid at the library are transferred monthly to the Cashier's Office. The University uses all possible means to collect overdue accounts, including:
- payroll deduction (if State Employee)
- collection agencies
- income tax refund garnishing
Fines for most collections are $. 20 per day per item. Films/Videos accrue fines at the rate of $ .50 per day per item. Recall items add an addition $ .50 per day to the regular fine rate. No fines are assessed if materials are returned within a grace period. If returned after a grace period is over, fines are retroactive to the first overdue day.
