Usability Research Lab
The Usability Research Lab in rooms 350 & 351 in Belk Library and Information Commons exists to help interested Appalachian State University faculty, students, and staff learn the benefits of a user-centered approach to design and to support usability testing.
The lab is equipped to collect video, audio, and computer data in real time for observation and analysis. To arrange for an introduction to lab software, contact Megan Johnson johnsnm@appstate.edu.
Lab Description
The lab consists of an observation room for the monitoring and recording of data, and a testing room for recording test subject's behavior.
The lab is equipped with a PC testing station with a web camera, microphone and Techsmith's Morae software, which can record the following elements during a usability testing session:
- Real-time desktop screen capture (video of what happens on the participant's computer screen)
- Audio of the test subject's comments
- Video of the test subject's face
- Advanced data collection including mouse clicks, keyboard input and screen text
