Starting in 1992, Dr. Mary Reichel was Appalachian State’s University Librarian (Dean of Libraries from 2012–2013; Interim Dean of Libraries from 2016–2017). From 2013–2015 she was Special Assistant to the Provost. In 2015 she entered phased retirement as a Librarian/Professor in the Library and will complete her phased responsibilities in December 2017. Dr. Reichel is conducting oral histories with alumni, retired faculty, and administrators in order to contribute to the understanding of Appalachian’s history and unique impact.
Her Ph.D. in Higher Education was awarded by Georgia State University. She holds the M.A. in Librarianship from the University of Denver, a M.Sc.Econ from the University of Wales, and a B.A. from Grinnell College. From 2000 to 2013, she was the Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor for Library and Information Studies.
