Items can be renewed online by logging in to your library account or by calling the Library Service Desk on the first floor at (828) 262-2818. Most items can be renewed twice unless another patron has requested the item or your account has expired. Renewals are for the same length as the original loan period for books and seven days for multimedia. Note, however, that items may be recalled during the renewal period.  Please note, renewal periods on Special Collections materials is 7 days each.

Materials cannot be renewed if:

  • Two renewals have already been granted.
  • The items are overdue.
  • A requested recall/hold has been placed on them by another patron.
  • The account record is blocked due to outstanding obligations.

See the Interlibrary Loan page for information on renewing these items.

  • Requesting: All students, faculty, and staff can request items from Appalachian's library or any other library and have them held at the desk for you.
  • Mail delivery: Distance and doctoral students can have books and documents delivered to their home.
  • Faculty delivery service: Faculty can have books delivered to their department via campus mail.

A "recalled" item is an item that someone else has requested. Books can be recalled after being checked out for 30 days. All multimedia items may be recalled after 7 days. Interlibrary loan items also are subject to recall.

Please note: Items needed for course reserves are subject to immediate recall.

Remote book drops are metal boxes located around campus where you can return most (but not all**) library materials (see book drops on campus map). Book drops are located by the Belk Library front doors, inside the Broyhill Music Library, on Bodenheimer Drive near the SRC, in the Stadium Parking Lot near Newland Hall, on Rivers Street on the ATM parking area, on Locust Street near East Hall, on Highway 321 at Appalachian Panhellenic Hall, and at Leon Levine Hall.

Please note that you are responsible for these library materials until they are checked in. When we check them in, the materials are cleared from your library account.

Book drops are checked Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Returned items will be backdated to the previous pickup date. For example, a book placed in a remote book drop on a Tuesday is picked up on Wednesday and will be backdated to Monday. Book drops are not checked on holidays or days the library is closed. Refer to our calendar for library hours.

**Note: DO NOT put items checked out at the Tech Desk in a book drop. These items must be returned to the Tech Desk. You are responsible for the value of these items until they are returned.

Exceptions:

  • Items checked out from the Technology Checkout Desk must be returned in-person.
  • Rental textbooks from the university bookstore cannot be returned to the library. Review the Bookstore website or call 828-262-3070 x 19 for instructions on textbook returns.

Fines

Students, staff, and faculty do not accrue overdue fines on most books and A/V materials. Fines will accrue for Reserve, Technology, and Interlibrary Loan items.

All patrons are billed for items not returned 30 days after the specified due date. Items not returned after 30 days will be automatically billed $60. If the item is returned, the $60 will be waived, but overdue fines may apply for some items.

Interlibrary loan items accrue fines of $0.50 per day up to $25, and are billed at $120. Once the item is returned the $120 will be waived, but overdue fines will apply.

For information about overdue fines on technology checkouts, contact the Technology Checkout Desk by phone at (828-262-2735).

Recalled items do not accrue late fines for most items.

Please note: Items needed for Course Reserves are subject to immediate recall and may accrue fines.

In most circumstances the library will accept a replacement copy of a lost or damaged book, journal, film, or video in lieu of the replacement cost. In that case, you will be charged a processing fee of $20. The replacement item must be an exact copy or an appropriate substitute (as determined by library staff) of the same author/title. Mass market paperbacks are not acceptable as replacement copies.

  • Students can pay library fines and fees in person at the Student Accounts office or online through Appalnet. To pay online, log in to your Appalnet account, click the Self-Service tab, then select the Student tab and the Student Accounts link.
  • Faculty and staff must contact the Student Accounts office to arrange payment. If you have completed coursework at Appalachian, you are able to pay online as a student using Appalnet. To pay online, log in to your Appalnet account, click the Self-Service tab, then select the Student tab and the Student Accounts link.
  • Community borrowers and spouses with AppCards make payments at the Library Service Desk on the main floor of Belk Library.

Note: All library fines and fees are transferred to the Student Accounts billing system on a nightly basis.
