Scholarly Publishing Services

The Digital Scholarship and Initiatives team is open to collaborating with faculty interested in scholarly publishing. Available resources include creating e-book and e-journals on local publishing platforms, helping you publish and preserve content on alternative platforms, and leveraging the print and administrative services of the UNC Press. The notion of "academic libraries as publishers" is a new and growing development, and we welcome your interest and ideas. We can help you:

  • Explore publishing pathways to make your research more readily and openly available through innovative technologies
  • Pursue open access publishing for journals and open educational resources
  • Partner with the University of North Carolina Press to develop both formal and informal publications
  • Seek grant opportunities
  • Apply standards, best practices, and metadata to your work
  • Leverage dataset preservation software to store datasets that accompany journals and research

Publish Open Access

Appalachian State University authors can publish open access with two major publishers without paying any article processing charges (APCs) through our partnerships with Cambridge University Press and Wiley. This opportunity is ideal for researchers who want to share their work openly but who may lack funding for Article Processing Charges (APCs), which are often thousands of dollars.

By choosing open access your work has the best chance to be read, cited, and shared. Wiley's research shows that open access articles are downloaded 3x more than subscription articles and cited 2x as much as subscription articles.

Open Access Publishing with Cambridge University Press

Starting in January 2021, Appalachian State University authors who are publishing articles in Cambridge University Press journals will be automatically eligible for open access publications.

All Appalachian personnel (faculty, students, staff, and others with @appstate.edu email addresses) are eligible to take advantage of this open access opportunity when publishing with Cambridge. To activate this offer, please ensure that the primary author for the article has an @appstate.edu email address.

Cambridge University Press publishes more than 380 peer-reviewed academic journals covering subjects across the humanities, social sciences, and science, technology, and medicine. To learn more about their journals, visit their website. If you need assistance identifying Cambridge journals that might be appropriate publication venues for your work, please contact your librarian. *There is a small list of Cambridge journals that do not offer open access publishing options and are excluded from this agreement. If you have questions, contact Agnes Gambill (gambillab@appstate.edu).
