Beulah Cambell Exhibit at BRAHM

Discovering the Art of Mid-20th-Century Children's Books at BRAHM

by Andie Combs

The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM) is presenting Storyboard to Storybook: The Beulah Campbell Collection at Appalachian State University, an exhibition of over 30 original illustrations, collages, and preparatory artworks from mid-20th-century children's books. The exhibit continues through June 8, 2025, and offers visitors a rare glimpse into the creative process behind some of the most beloved tales of the day.  In addition, the exhibit was featured in the Watauga Democrat.

The collection celebrates the artist and illustrators of many beloved children’s books.  The exhibit shares themes of identity, heritage and imagination, illustrating evolving cultural narratives in children's literature. The exhibition also includes manuscript mock-ups and printer's proofs that detail the author-illustrator process. Exhibit participants are also able to build their own story sequences at an interactive Storyboard Station that further enhances their understanding of the art of storytelling.

Appalachian State University's Belk Library Special Collections holds the Beulah Campbell Collection.  The collection was built up by Beulah Campbell, a teacher at Appalachian State Teachers College, in order to aid in teaching and preserve the artistic merit of children's books. Her collection began at a time when children's books began to welcome diversity and social transformation.

Through this production, BRAHM pays tribute to the ongoing influence of these sketches and recognizes Beulah Campbell's legacy in children's literature, offering a nostalgic and educational experience to audiences of all ages.
