The Employee Appreciation Committee (EAC) held its annual CeLIBration event on April 29th. The event featured food, games, and an opportunity for Library Faculty and staff to unwind before the busy exam season started. The committee also acknowledged and awarded staff recognitions voted on by library personnel.
They acknowledged University Libraries employees who reached milestone years of service this academic year.
- 5 Years - Adam Baldwin, Kari Salisbury, Rebecca Shaw, Shane Watson
- 10 Years - Mollie Peuler
- 15 years - Kelly Burkett, Jonathan Candelaria, Michael O’Hara, Amy Love
- 20 Years - Paul Grant
- 25 years - Gary Boye
- 30 years - John Doherty
The group also gave EAC Awards. The awards provide the perfect opportunity to recognize an individual, team, committee, or group of library faculty or staff for their great work during the past academic year. Below please find the award winners for 2023-2024:
Appalachian Spirit - Hunter Phillips
The Appalachian Spirit Award is given to an individual who personifies the Appalachian Spirit of contributing to an encouraging work environment. Said about our winner, Hunter is dedicated to student success and innovation. His skill set and positive attitude help foster incredible connections between the library and Appalachian community at-large. Whether he’s presenting at a conference, attending a football game, or teaching a class, this person truly gives their all to App State.”

Staff Mountain Mover - Ben Shirley
The Mountain Mover Award which is given to an individual who has gone above and beyond on an initiative that has elevated the service and standing of Appalachian State University Libraries. The nominator said about Ben, "His leadership qualities, cheerful demeanor, humor, and patience shine as he leads not just App and the rest of the WNCLN, but all the Phase 1 schools through the Alma migration. His commitment to this project has been unwavering, even during post-Helene hardship. We could read you the treatise we received on everything this person has done, but to save you several hours just present him the award.”
Faculty Mountain Mover - Meredith Taylor
The Mountain Mover Award which is given to an individual who has gone above and beyond on an initiative that has elevated the service and standing of Appalachian State University Libraries. The nominator said about Meredith as she has shown exceptional leadership and dedication to the Alma migration project, “She has demonstrated exemplary problem-solving and organizational skills, helping guide us all through this project. Additionally, she has taken on a leadership role in the enormous task of writing and organizing our faculty foundational documents. The work she has done makes all our work more streamlined.

Group Award - Belk Library Housekeeping staff
The Group Award is given to a group or team who have gone above and beyond on an initiative that has elevated the service and standing of Appalachian State University Libraries. This award goes to a group that has made a difference in the library through their teamwork and collaboration. The nominator said, "Our Housekeepers make a huge, positive impact every single day. The library is a welcoming place for students- they love it here. This would not be true without the daily hard work [of this team].” The folks on this team are always friendly and kind. of our students, faculty, and staff.
