Collaboration with Art Classes for Art Displays

We hosted our first Foundations of Art class installation in the Belk Library.  This is a collaboration with three art faculty and the Libraries' administrative team to bring more student artwork into our libraries.  The University Libraries worked alongside Professors Ethridge, Goodman, and Rich from the Department of Art to develop innovative learning opportunities for students.  Assignments for the classes incorporated library research to enhance the art pieces they produce, which will be tailored to suit public display spaces within the Belk Library.

The Artwork can be found in Belk Library in the grand staircase, Special Collections, and on the first floor atop the DVD shelving.

Professor Erin Ethridge described the project as,  "Taking inspiration from Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities, students imagined their own fantastical or abstract cities and then built sculptures out of reed, tissue paper, and string to visualize them. Working within the same size constraints of the wooden frames allows the students’ collection of projects to survey a range of themes and stylistic approaches while theoretically belonging to the same world. This assignment emphasizes visual communication skills, imagination, and material experimentation."

We look forward to more collaborations in the fall.
