Foundations ART 1002 Class Display in Belk Library - Our Dream Cities

Erin Ethridge, Art Department Foundations Class Coordinator in the Art Department, has turned Belk Library into a creative landscape with “Dream Cities,” a student exhibition from ART 1002 – Foundations II. Inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, the project invites students to imagine and build fantastical worlds, blending individual creativity with collective vision through striking three-dimensional works displayed throughout the library.

Erin Ethridge has taken the Belk Library as a canvas for her student projects.  Thus allowing students to design for specific spaces with their “Dream Cities” project.

This project aspires to activate student’s individual visionary powers while still working together in community.  Finding inspiration in Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, students imagined their own fantastical or abstract cities then visualized them in three-dimensional form.  Our hope is that these projects function as individual works and as a collection, expressing students’ individual interest in creating an imaginary shared world.
