Please join us in congratulating Dr. Gary Boye, Professor and Director of the Music Library, on his forthcoming retirement, June 30, 2026. Gary began his career with the Appalachian State University Music Library in 2000 and had many accomplishments including:
- Providing outstanding library resources, collections, and services to the students and faculty in the Hayes School of Music
- Procuring, cataloging, promoting, and performing the Matanya Opfee Collection, one of the world's largest collections of classical guitar music from the 19th and early-20th centuries
- Member of the Graduate Teaching Faculty where he taught classes in the Hayes School of Music including Music Research for Performers, Local Music Traditions, and the Music of Doc and Merle Watson
- Mentored many library staff, faculty, and student workers
- Collaborated on organizing Guitar Fest, an annual guitar event held at the Hayes School of Music
- Member of the Appalachian State Guitar Ensemble and performer in various recitals and concerts
- Served on the Board of Directors for the Lute Society of America
- Chaired the Libraries' Promotion and Tenure Committee and multiple search committees
- Researched and published or presented more than 50 scholarly and creative works in a variety of library and music publications and conferences
