In 2023, Industrial Design faculty member Jimena Vergara Sanz approached Kevin Freeman about borrowing a 3D scanner from the library for use in her coursework. While the scanner could not be loaned out, Freeman immediately offered to handle the scanning in-house. This collaboration soon expanded into a class project involving Vergara Sanz and a group of students with limb differences, who developed creative limb concepts that emphasized personal expression as much as function.

The primary goal of the 3D scan was to provide Industrial Design students with an accurate digital model on which to base a custom prosthetic hand for Vergara Sanz. Freeman scanned her arm, stitched together multiple images, and produced a detailed 3D model that the program could use as a foundation for their design work. Having access to a precise scan significantly improved the potential comfort and fit of the prosthetic. From initial imaging to assembling the final model, the process took approximately two days.

Freeman shared that he would be eager to support similar projects in the future, especially those that expand access to prosthetics for individuals who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
