Library and Interior Design Partnership

The University Libraries partnered with Professors Devin Waddell and Brian Davies, Interior Design faculty, in two classes this semester.  This collaboration was part of the Libraries’ project to gather input from students on the Belk Library and Information Commons master plan.

Interior Design 3320 focused on the environment and human behavior in the Belk Library.  The students conducted observations in the Belk Library to document how individuals interact with their surroundings, access information, and utilize study and collaboration areas.  Student research from this class was shared with Interior Design Studio II - 2110 to help them in final designs.  Based on their research the main drivers for the student designs included:

  • Ergonomic and ancillary furniture

  • Better acoustics to minimize distractions

  • Thoughtful lighting design to reduce eye strain

  • Color theory - using a calming palette in quiet areas vs brighter colors in active areas

  • More defined study zones such as private nooks and group spaces to help balance individual and collaborative work

  • Smart wayfinding for easier navigation

  • Dual monitors & additional outlets

Interior Design 2110 students each selected an area of the Belk Library for their project, produced sensory strategies for this area, created two dimensional floor plans, and final 3D virtual renderings.  Throughout the class, they presented their work to the Dean of Libraries and members of our Master Plan Steering Committee for feedback.  These students helped us imagine and explore our space without limits.  Their final designs featured biophilia, more individual seating, themed study rooms, redesigned entryways, better signage, and App State spirit.  The Libraries now has over 30 concept ideas with color, lighting, patterns, and furnishings to help us with ideas moving forward.

Select student projects were presented to the Libraries Advisory Council during their fall meeting, creating a wonderful opportunity for the students to highlight their creativity and achievements to donors and supporters.  Several of the final 3D designs were presented to members of the Administration and Foundation Board during a reception for the Apparel Design and Merchandising Showcase on April 26.

This was a great learning experience for everyone involved and we thank Brian, Devin, and the students for working with us.
