The University Libraries' mission is to inspire and guide all who purse knowledge. The 2024 Student Art Contest perfectly encapsulated this mission for both our students and faculty. With the theme "Journey of the Mind: Exploring The University Experience," the contest was crafted to provide students with a platform to articulate their unique perspectives and experiences as members of Appalachian State University.
With over 35 submissions, the contest surpassed the expectations of both the University Libraries and the Art Contest Committee in terms of student participation. Additionally, it served as an opportunity to showcase the artists and their work to the local community. The announcement of the winner became a highlight during the First Friday Art Crawl, presented by the Downtown Boone Development Association. This crossover yielded an outstanding result: the student participants were given the chance to sell their artwork and receive recognition for their dedication and effort!
Thanks to the diligent efforts of the University Libraries Art Contest Committee, our local community, and the exceptional talent of Appalachian State University students, the Student Art Contest was a resounding success! Let it mark the beginning of a cherished tradition for our Libraries' faculty, staff, students, and community alike.
Without further ado, here are the results of the 2024 Student Art Contest:

3rd Place Honorable Mentions, $200 each: Emma Schneider, "A Studious Gaze"; Lian Aponi Snow, "1111"; Sky Simmons, "Boone Housing Blues"
The committee presented awards to the student winners, followed by a reception on the first floor of Belk Library.
"The event was wonderful and well received" said committee member, Kelly Burkett. "I hope we are able to continue the contest for many years to come. I look foward to seeing the winning art peices installed on 2nd floor, our special location for student art."
