Requiem for Father

My dad and I bobbled in a

dinghy

A word so silly I thought he had made it up
A man full of nonsense

The boat filled
Ankle-high with briny water

My dad held a sponge the size of a hymnal
And handed me one too

A sponge? I thought
A sponge against a boatload of water?

He showed me how
Dip low into the water and wring out into the bay

Dip and wring
Dip and wring

In rhythm we worked
Unit the absence became apparent.
