DSI currently offers two separate scanning services for students and faculty/staff. Our in-house operation provides digitization of your real world objects. This can be useful in product design, historical research and archiving, manufacturing, art and creative design, and in the medical field as well. See a few examples of our previous scans. We will supply you with a high resolution OBJ file you can edit in your favorite 3D modeling software or an STL file for 3D printing. For objects too large or delicate to bring into our facility (e.g., sculptures) we can arrange off site scanning within reason.

We are also offering large scale room scans with the use of our Matterport camera suitable for virtual tours and showcases. Here is an example with our very own Makerspace.

To make an inquiry or schedule an appointment for a 3D scan, please see our scanning request form.

FAQ

Why is the library offering this service?

We strive to provide the latest technology and tools to enhance research and experiential learning. 3D scanning is used to scan real-world objects so they can be incorporated into the product design process, reverse engineering, preservation of cultural heritage, personalized medical treatment and as a start of 3D printing.

What are the limitations of scanning an individual object?

Some objects are harder to capture than others due to factors like shiny surfaces, some intricate details, clear glass, hair and other small fibers.

Is it possible to print from a 3D scan?

Yes. We will provide you with the necessary files to print your object but are not responsible for the printing process.

How else can I use the scan?

The sky's the limit. There are numerous 3D editing software and hosting services available online or through App State. After scanning an object, you can export an OBJ file and edit it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can export an STL for 3D printing.

What’s the deal with room scans?

The large room scans are stored externally on Matterport’s website but can be viewed in any browser with the provided link. These captures are beneficial in giving accessible tours of on-campus areas.
