Hi, I’m Freddie! Like Fred the Bear, I came from Alaska. Though, as of a few months ago the same scenes had grown a bit tiring. I thought to myself: ‘you know what, maybe it’s time for a change.’ So I did, I took some time to text Fred, I knew he had gone on tour and settled over on the east coast in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was some kind of college town, which sounded nice. There were plenty of mountains around the campus, and the library sounded warm enough to hibernate in.
Now, when I got here, I believe it was late October, I was already trying to get ready for winter. First-things-first, I need to find a nice place to sleep. The first place I thought of was this tunnel by the road, but that didn’t work out. While the hills would have been nice for tumbling, and the pond could have been good for eating, the tunnel was very busy and noisy too, and of course, the lack of a den. I couldn’t exactly burrow through the concrete.
So I texted Fred again. Apparently it might be a bit tricky to find somewhere that met my needs while being within my budget, which was nothing. He said that there was a place I could stay. It happened that the library had space for me. Fred suggested we split the rent in the Lower Level.
When I moved into the lower level of Belk Library, I found that it was warm and in the ground, perfect for hibernation. It helped that the closest view outside was the surrounding hills and mountains that cupped the town. Plus, there was another hill just outside the library - another opportunity to roll down once it snowed.
The real treat came when I actually took a look around my new home. Now, I hadn’t been one for reading, which made sense given that there’s not much to read in a forest, but that wasn’t to say I didn’t like to read. In fact, I’d say the opposite was true, I loved it, I just didn’t have many chances to read. Having tried ebooks, I have to say that it’s hard to use the screens with paw or claw, though it was a bit harder to figure out the password to a phone that a tourist had dropped while running away (I don’t even know why they were running, I was minding my own business, they just happened to be walking on my trail).
While I’m here, I figured that I might as well get a start on my education. I’ve sat in on a few classes, no one seemed to mind. Other than that, I’ve been trying to figure out what some students have been doing with honey, and where I can get some. When I’m not looking for food, I’m usually back in the library. Fred may be fine with just hanging around in the open, but I’m usually hiding in the back shelves, looking for books; if not that, then I’m probably around the tech desks. I play on the computers occasionally, and have already used my available 3d prints for the semester.
Supposedly there are other bears all around in this town. I’ve seen a few, but their fur looks a lot different than mine. They seem to be a bit more scared of people than the ones back home, too. I still want to meet them though, but I probably won’t do that until winter is over. Once it’s warm, I’m probably going to try to go out on some of the trails around here, maybe fish or meet some other bears. Though, sometimes I don’t want to hunt, so I might go to this place called ‘The Cardinal,’ I hear they have some kind of burger with elk.
