BOONE, N.C. — April 16, 2026 — The University Libraries hosted the Creative Collaboration Expo on the fourth floor of Belk Library, highlighting a year of partnerships among students, faculty and staff.
The event featured interdisciplinary projects that demonstrated the Libraries’ role as a hub for creativity and experiential learning.
Interior Design Studio III students presented redesigned study spaces developed in collaboration with library faculty. Several concepts, including updated layouts and furnishings, have already been implemented in Belk Library.
The Expo also showcased work from a 24-hour Create-A-Thon with Second Story Media, where students produced logos, flyers and other promotional materials for campus and community partners.
Technology-focused collaborations included 3D-scanned and printed prosthetic hand prototypes developed in partnership with Industrial Design. These prototypes were created using advanced scanning techniques and refined through multiple iterations, with testing conducted in both the Libraries’ Makerspace and academic lab environments. The project highlighted how emerging technologies can support accessibility-focused design and real-world problem solving.
Additional exhibits highlighted educational and artistic initiatives, including projects from the Instructional Materials Center and Foundations of Art program using Special Collections materials.
Visitors also explored rare materials in the Rhinehart Rare Books Room and attended a classical guitar recital featuring selections from the Matanya Ophee Collection. The performance program included:
Study in B minor, Fernando Sor (1778–1839), performed by Barrett Kesling
Etude No. 2, Matteo Carcassi (1792–1853), performed by Ashton Meetze
Variations on a Theme by Mozart, Fernando Sor (1778–1839), performed by Hailey Minter
Fantasia, Op. 19, Luigi Legnani (1790–1877), performed by Damon Chrismon
Nocturne, Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806–1856), performed by Austin Knudsen
Lob der Tränen, Franz Schubert (1797–1828), arranged by Mertz, performed by Cameron Fernandez
Etude No. 6, Giulio Regondi (1822–1872), performed by Thomas Sorber
Interactive elements included a photo booth featuring Freddie the Bear, the University Libraries’ mascot. Freddie served as a central engagement point during the event, inviting attendees to take photos, use themed props and connect with the Libraries in a more informal, approachable way. The mascot’s presence helped create a welcoming atmosphere while reinforcing school spirit and encouraging participation across student, faculty and community groups.
The Creative Collaboration Expo underscores the University Libraries’ commitment to collaboration, innovation and student engagement across campus.
