Russell Paige named Student Employee Supervisor of the Year

Please join us in congratulating Russell Paige for being selected as the 2026-2027 Supervisor of the Year by the Office of Student Employment.   Russell supervises 12 students during the evening and night shifts for the Access and Public Services division.  Russell received this award on Tuesday, April 28 during the 2026 Awards of Distinction Event. Here are a few things his nominators had to say about Russell:

  • Russell Paige has had a meaningful impact on my development in both Career and Self Development and Communication throughout my time working under him. What makes his mentorship so unique is how he encourages us to take our work seriously while also reminding us to take care of ourselves as people.
  • Russell consistently emphasizes that our education and long-term career goals come first. He checks in with us about our classes, future plans, and overall well-being, encouraging us to stay focused and motivated while also maintaining balance. At the same time, he reminds us that it is important to enjoy life and practice self-care. Some of my favorite moments at work have come from conversations about hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway, walking our dogs, and other ways we recharge outside of work. These interactions may seem simple, but they have helped me understand the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between professional responsibilities and personal well-being.
  • In addition to supporting our personal growth, Russell models strong communication skills every day. He encourages open and respectful communication among student employees, librarians, and other night and evening staff. Because of his example, I have become more confident in asking questions, sharing information, and working collaboratively with others.
  • He also demonstrates how to handle more challenging situations with professionalism and clarity. When difficult interactions arise with patrons, Russell shows us how to communicate effectively and when it is appropriate to involve the Appalachian Police Department. Observing and participating in these situations has helped me develop confidence in navigating conflict while maintaining respect and composure.
  • Overall, Russell leads by example in a way that has strengthened both my professional communication skills and my ability to prioritize my personal and career development. His guidance has helped me grow not only as an employee, but as a well-rounded individual.

Congratulations Russell for receiving this important award - it's a big deal and you earned it!
