How to Explore by Subject
Library databases use subject headings to help researches locate sources that are about similar topics. Each book or article is assigned at least one subject heading. Searching within subject headings is a good way to quickly narrow down your search.
The examples below are from a Library Search “Search anything” search. Individual databases (like EBSCO and ProQuest) may look and work a bit differently, but will have the same features.
Refine by Subject
- To refine your search results by subject, look for subject filters on the left side of the screen.
- Remember that you can also use resource type filters to see only books or articles, if needed.
You can also click the subject headings associated with a specific sources to find others like them. Click an item’s title to see its details, including subject links.
Once you are familiar with some of the subject headings associated with your research topic, you can use the subject field to do more targeted searches. Use the advanced search option to do this.
