Check out the new high-tech drink/water and snack machines located in the Library’s Atrium near Classroom 114 and the bus stop! These new machines offer greater selections of snacks (including some healthy alternatives), power drinks, chilled coffee drinks, juice, green tea and lifewaters. We hope to add more healthy snacks to the machines. Feel free to let us know what you would like to see in the snack machines. Check it out and happy snacking!

You asked, we listened! Change in laptop loan periods:
Starting today (3/19), all laptop checkouts in the library will increase from a four-hour checkout to an eight-hour checkout with 1 (two-hour) renewal. Please let us know how you like this change.

The Library Student Advisory Group met on February 23rd and offered some excellent suggestions for developing the kiosks.
- Interactive Campus Maps – with maybe the capability to give directions to other buildings.
- Put Belk Library floor maps on the kiosk with things like bathrooms, snack machines etc. listed on them
- With the maps, have a listing of what items are on each floor
- List of the Library of congress subject areas (classification guides) like the posters around the building so patrons would know where to browse an area.
- Searchable directories
- Applecart schedules
- Having a background on the Kiosks on the library’s closing time for the day.
- Put a clock face on the kiosk so patrons would know the time.
- Link to the comments/suggestions link
The kiosks are definitely a work in progress, so please let us know what you would like to see!

Three new videos!
- If you have a citation, or finding a "known" item
- Finding Articles' Full-text Using Find@ASU
- Finding Books: Searching other Libraries (using ABC Express or UNC express)
These brief tutorials (only 2 or 3 minutes each) will make the time you spend doing research more efficient. If you are a professor, and would like these videos embedded into your AsULearn course, contact Megan johnson @ johnsnm@appstate.edu.

The Appalachian State University Global Film Series presents Tambien la Lluviaa (Even the Rain) on Tuesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in I.G. Greer Auditorium. Admission is free.
The award-winning film is directed by Iciar Bollain and stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Luis Tosar.
Set in contemporary Cochabamba, Bolivia, the film deals with matters of globalization, indigenous rights, and environmental/sustainable development issues.
Benito Del Pliego, an associate professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, will introduce the film. A panel discussion featuring study abroad students that traveled to Cochabamba will share what they learned about the Bolivian people and issues highlighted in the film.

In support of Scholar's Day, Saturday February 25, the library will be open from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Faculty members will be using many library study rooms to conduct interviews with prospective Appalachian students until 2 p.m.

The library has added new touchscreen information kiosks on each floor of the building. These monitors will give you instant, easy access to some of our most popular web tools:
- Book group study rooms
- View computer availability maps
- Find events in the library
Our technology services staff is currently working on getting small printers attached to each monitor, so that students may print out confirmation slips when booking group study rooms.
Kiosk Locations
- 1st floor: Two are located between the front doors and the reference desk
- Lower level, 2nd, and 3rd floors: One on each floor by the main elevators
We're working on additional apps to add to the kiosks. Can you think of anything else you'd like to be able to do on these kiosks? Let us know in the comments.

Submit a short work of fiction (must be 500 words or less) and you could win a $150 gift certificate from the University Bookstore. Gift certificates to the top 3 authors. Open to all current Appalachian State University Students.
- Story must be 500 words or less
- Story must include the Wired Scholar Coffee Shop in some manner
- Double-spaced, typed, 12-point font
- Submit entry by email attachment (.doc or .pdf file) with subject line "Flash Fiction Contest" to boydjd@appstate.edu
- Put your name and email address on attached cover sheet
- Deadline for all stories is Friday, March 16 (deadline extended to March 23), 2012 at 5:00 p.m.

Belk Library is hosting training sessions for Web of Science and EndNote Web.
Date: Tuesday, February 14
Time: Web of Science 12:00pm - 1:00pm | EndNote 1:00pm - 2:00pm
Location: Belk Library, room 024
Thomson Reuters, producer of both products, is sending one of their trainer/teachers for one workshop for each product. Seating in each session is limited to the first 40 who email requesting a seat. Each class is 1 hour.
To register for either session, please email John Abbott (abbottjp@appstate.edu) and put "workshop" in the subject line and indicate which session(s) you wish to attend.
