Return to 24/5 operation

Dear colleagues and students,

I am delighted to tell you that the Belk Library & Information Commons will return to 24/5 operation, Sundays through Thursdays, starting on March 16, 2014.  Provost Gonzalez and Chancellor Peacock were very eager to make this happen. I appreciate their encouragement and also wish to thank Appalachian State students for considering the Library so important to their success.

Please note:

Got Fines?

Paying Library Fines and Fees

Students, staff, and faculty pay library fines and fees through the Student Accounts office. All library fines and fees for students, staff, and faculty are transferred to the Student Accounts billing system on a nightly basis.  Only community borrowers and spouses or domestic partners with AppCards make payments at the Circulation Services Desk on the main floor of Belk Library.

No ABC Express Service over Winter Break

There will be no ABC Express Service from December 21st to January 1st because the libraries at Appalachian State University, Western Carolina, and University of North Carolina Ashville
will be closed.

Sorry for any inconvenience!

Dancing in the Library

During the first few weeks of September, dancers in Collaborative Process (DAN 4830) have visited the Library twice to learn about its resources: once, on September 10, to learn about library resources for their final papers, and again on September 19, to explore how physical space affects their creative processes.  One visit involved sitting in a computer classroom; the other involved actually dancing on the main staircase and in the first floor atrium. In both cases, they used the Library's resources to explore dance intellectually and physically.

MORE database testing

Between Monday July 8th and Wednesday July 31st, the library will be testing connections in EBSCO, ProQuest, Gale, and the Web of Science databases.

The library is testing functionality only – for example, can you get to the resource? Does the ILLiad link work and fill the correct form out with the resource information? We will work on the interface’s "look and feel" if the tests prove successful.

Recycling in the Library

The Appalachian campus is now recycling in a single stream. Not sure what that means? All recyclables can be placed in a single bin that are marked with the Single Stream Recycling stickers (the above image). Not sure what can be recycled? Go to the Office of Sustainability's Recycling Guide for a complete list of items accepted for single stream.

Library Services at the Central Service Desk this Summer

This summer, look to the center desk for library services.  We've moved all 1st Floor services to that center desk.  Need to check out a book, movie, or laptop?  That's the place.  Have a question about your research or need help with a tech problem?  That's right.  That's the place.

Spring 2013 Edition of the Commons

The latest issue of The Commons, the library's newsletter is now available on the library's giving page.  The theme of the Spring 2013 edition is Student learning, and highlights collaborations between librarians and faculty across campus.  An interview with Dean Reichel is included, outlining her twenty years of leadership and details about her future assignment in Academic Affairs.
